Christmas Carol'd

Christmas Carol'd A rewrite of the familiar A Christmas Carol, Carol'd is a humorous retelling of Scrooge's nighttime journey. This dress was made for a single actress who played multiple characters.

Christmas Carol'd The carolers acted as narrators for the story as well as characters within the scenes, so they were onstage almost the entire show. This made costume changes nearly impossible, so this dress was worn by the actress as the base garment for all of her outfits.

Christmas Carol'd We built this dress from scratch, and I spent most of my time on the muslin mockup, which meant making sure that everything fit together properly. Here you can see some of the gathering at the wrist of the sleeve.

Christmas Carol'd Gathering in plaid is especially difficult because I needed to make sure everything was gathered evenly, otherwise it was very visible. It also made staring at the gathering a dizzying feat...

Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening

Spring Awakening The breeches were kept up using suspenders, something we use often in our department. Here you can see the finished waistband and center back seam with attached suspender buttons.

Spring Awakening I finished the waistband which included properly folding, pressing, and sewing using the "stitch in the ditch" method.

Spring Awakening I cut and added a placket to the fly of the pants for more structural integrity and better support for the snaps.
COSTUMING
I had the opportunity to spend three years as a technician in the Eastern Michigan University costume shop. During this time, I learned an immense amount about pulling, altering, and building costumes. Featured here are a few of the garments that I spent the most time on.
Besides working as the technician, I also acted as a teaching assistant for the intro costume course for two and a half years. I helped teach students to sew by hand and machine, which included: ruffles, bias tape, hems, seams, hand stitching, buttons, snaps, hook and bar, thread loop/swing tacks, and constructing a functional cinching bag with a homemade appliqué.
